Mistake
Mistake
Professionalism does not guarantee a successful future. People avoid doing unreasonable actions by shunning. People may still shun people because they do not want to get involve with a complicated situation. It is also possible that they do not want others to influence younger generations that are related to them. There are many reasons why people shun others. Stealing is one of many why the society change their way of treating others, like Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson. By shunning, society changes lives.
By a simple mistake, it can make a major impact on the future. O.J. Simpson, a retired professional football player, was born in San Francisco, California. He was also a football broadcaster and an actor. He set some records for playing football that resulted to be elected at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In September 2007, Simpson came with his group of friends to the Palace Station Hotel at Las Vegas, and they took items with possession of deadly weapons. The police questioned him and he said, “It was stolen from him.” Simpson and three other men were arrested for conspiracy, kidnapping, and robbery. In October 2007, Walter Alexander and Charles Cashmore are the criminal defendants accepted to testify against Simpson exchange of reducing charges. The trail held 12 counts of Simpson. After a year, Simpson and three other men were found guilty. Simpson received 33 years of prison and parole in 9 years but he would probably face life sentence. He is now in Nevada Department of Correction at the Lovelock Correctional Center.
Simpson’s action affected his image as a retired football player to the society. Even though he had an excellent life career, the society does not approve of what he did. People started to remember him as a convicted felon instead of a successful retired football player, broadcaster, and actor. The society had begun shunning him. Some people rejected him as an icon to the sports world. Because of shunning, his family got affected by his actions. For example, tabloids wrote about his family, but he did not state what it was about.
Both characters experienced public shunning although they committed different acts. O.J. Simpson represents Letter R for Robbery and Hester represents Letter A for Adultery. Simpson disobeyed the law by stealing because of personal gain. On the other hand, Hester committed adultery because she had an affair with Arthur Dimmesdale and having a child with him. Both resulted imprisonment, which symbolizes isolation and alienation. Hester and Simpson made a sin that change their lives forever. It changed their personality because of what they have done to be shunned. Hester already paid her debt towards the society and Simpson is just starting.
Stealing that resulted being shunned affected not only the life of the one who committed the crime but also others that are related to them. Public shunning is playing a major role in the society because it would help the future generations to avoid the previous mistakes that the shunned people did. Public shunning matters because it would help the society to be better. It is a relevant matter that will not cause unnecessary idolism. Simple idolism may lead to consequences that have to repay in the future.

The Scarlet Letter: Arthur Dimmesdale
•Thesis
The effect of Dimmesdale's self punishment leads to confliction with his self identity
•Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale
What does he look like?
"He was a person of very striking aspect, with a white lofty, and impending brow, large, brown,
melancholy eyes, and a mouth which,
unless he forcibly compressed it,
was apt to be tremulous, expressing
both nervous sensibility and a vast
power of self-restraint". (57)
•Physical Symbolic Traits
Dimmesdale's clean and organized appearance gives off the impression that he is a put together guy.
His need for organization in his
life hides the fact that underneath
it all, he is actually apprehensive
and nervous.
•Role in society
Arthur Dimmesdale is a reverend. As a reverend, his life has always been about God and his teachings. He focuses on religion and the importance of spreading it.
"Therefore, so far as his duties would permit, he trode in the shadowy paths, and thus kept himself simple and child-like; coming forth, when occasion was, with a freshness, and fragrance, and dewy purify of thought, which, as many people said, affected them like the speech of an angel". (57)
•Good vs Evil
Mr. Dimmesdale represents Good because he is a pastor, he is the connection between God and people. He is the voice that speaks directly to God.
~"'Speak women.' said another voice, coldly and sternly proceeding from the crowd about the scaffold. 'speak and give your child a father.'"
Mr. Dimmesdale also represents evil because he helped Hester Prynne commit adultery to her husband by sleeping with her. He did not own up to his mistake and instead left Hester to suffer alone.
